Why can’t everybody just get along and love one another? Why can’t our society work together to make our home a better place?
All these questions are so very important to our society! During the Great Depression it was very hard to love and to have hope and faith, as there were many people suffering during those times. But in these times, things have changed! Our society gives people better conditions to be happy, to have hope and to love. Sure the Great Depression left us, but for some people there is still suffering today, with no home, no food, no family, no hope and no love! We are still looking for solutions to these problems.
First of all, the change starts with you! Mahatma Gandhi once said “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. A lot of people think “Oh, I can’t make a change because I am not smart enough,” or “I can’t make a change because I am too young or too old,” or “I can’t make a change because it wouldn’t make a difference anyway.” These things are not true; anybody can do anything if they just believe in themselves and stay positive! It’s not just the big changes that count, but the little ones too. In fact lots of little changes make big changes! Like seeing someone sitting alone at school and you start talking to them, or seeing someone who doesn’t have enough money to pay for her/his lunch and you offer to pay. These things can make a huge difference for the other person. They will think “Wow, someone actually cares about me”. And this is my point, the love that we have for society and for others will help us make these changes. All these positive things we want to see in our society!
In the book Of Mice and Men, the characters went through hard times, like Curly’s wife felt lonely and not loved and felt left out, as was the same with Crooks, who felt unloved because he was black. We don’t want our world to become a place where no one trusts anybody or we can’t rely on anybody. We want it to be a place where we can give and receive love from one another. George and Lenny had this kind of relationship; they where always there for one another. George helped Lenny who had disabilities, get through life, till the very tragic end. We need to be there for others who struggle in life too!
