How many great answers, solutions to problems, words of praise and encouragement, different perspectives have been left in the minds of students in classrooms around the world. There are many reasons for this: some students are reserved; sometimes there is not enough trust in the environment (the fear is not just of student comments and looks but of the teacher’s as well); and sometimes there is not enough relevance or purpose to evoke a response.
Today, I posted the responses of our English Grade 9 + 10 class to a few pre-reading questions on the classic novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The idea is to give their voice, their thoughts, their ideas an audience beyond the classroom. Hopefully this semester, the students will become, more and more, the creators and producers of the work that you see here and other places. The sharing of the talents and gifts is important in giving their work meaning and purpose – more on that tomorrow!
